External Advertising: Do You Look Like Who You Are?
You know how you recognize an ad before you see the store name? You KNOW it’s a Wal-Mart ad or a Nordstrom ad. They each have a look that tells you about their service and the quality of the merchandise.
On TV, you've seen those five-second teasers about Today's 15 Minute Of Fame Candidate and in those five seconds of film, you drew a LOT of conclusions about how much money, education and intelligence they had. Nice person? Mean person? Successful? Loser? You KNEW. ..in five seconds or less without words.
And yet at every seminar when I mention this concept, people say to me, "It really doesn't matter what I wear to work. It's about what I DO that counts. I get the job done! I know my stuff! All the rest is window dressing."
Yes, that is all very true. And wouldn't it be a shame if you never got to "show your stuff" because you were eliminated before you even knew there was an opportunity? "Window Dressing" is what makes people come into the store. Crummy home page on a web site? You just move on!
Your outsides must match your insides or you are guilty of false advertising!
If you, personally, do not look, sound and act like a knowledgeable, competent, successful business person, you will often be passed by because the human brain requires consistency in order to function quickly. Today no one has the time to think past that first impression.
- If you have a mind like a steel trap and you look like a bimbo, or a “girl,” don’t be surprised when they don't take your seriously.
- If you are a financial genius, but always look like you're on your way to the golf course, don't be surprised when they do business with someone who looks more like a serious businessperson.
- If you look like a slob, people assume that you take no better care of their orders and your work, than you do of yourself.
Even in these days of "business casual," you must remember that the most important word in the phrase "business casual" is BUSINESS. Dressing a little better will not hurt your business, I promise!
